Doc. Math. J. DMV 133 The Work of Peter W. Shor

چکیده
Much of the work of Peter Shor has a strong geometrical avor typically coupled with deep ideas from probability complexity theory or combinatorics and always woven together with brilliance and insight of the rst magnitude Due to the space limitations of this note I will restrict myself to brief descriptions of just four of his remarkable achievements unfortunately omitting discussions of his seminal work on randomized incremental algorithms of fundamental importance in computational geometry and his provocative results in computational biology on self assembling virus shells

The Church-Turing thesis says that a digital computer is a universal computational device; that is, it is able to simulate any physically realizable computational device. It has generally been believed that this simulation can be made eecient so that it entails at most a polynomial increase in computation time. This may not be true if quantum mechanics is taken into consideration. A quantum com...
متن کاملCapacities of quantum channels and how to find them
We survey what is known about the information transmitting capacities of quantum channels, and give a proposal for how to calculate some of these capacities using linear programming.

It has been shown by Nistor (Doc Math J DMV 2:263–295, 1997) that given any extension of associative algebras over C, the connecting morphism in periodic cyclic homology is compatible, under the Chern–Connes character, with the index morphism in lower algebraic K -theory. The proof relies on the abstract properties of cyclic theory, essentially excision, which does not provide explicit formulas...
